EU-Whistleblower Directive
The European Parliament passed the Directive on the protection of whistleblowers (2019/1937) on 07.10.2019. According to the Directive, companies must essentially adapt to the following innovations:
4. Graduated reporting system
The Directive specifies that persons reporting breaches of the law should, in principle, report initial breaches of the law to the whistleblowing unit set up. The whistleblower should only be able to contact an authority, if the company does not initiate appropriate follow-up action within three months. If no appropriate measures are taken after reporting the breach to the authorities, whistleblowers may also go public.
